I had the oppurtunity to see Alexis Jones speak at my university a couple months ago and have been meaning to read her book, I Am That Girl, ever since. I finally remembered to order it on Monday, and anxiously anticipated its arrival all week. I read the entire thing (minus the first chapter, which I'd already read) this weekend and really enjoyed it. I'm not someone who usually reads (or enjoys) "self-help" books, but I found this to be less self-help-like and more motivational and inspiring. It's full of experiences and advice, and not just from the author herself, but other successful women, from activists to actresses to entrepreneurs. Alexis covers everything from integrity to compassion to boldness, and there's never a dull moment. It's also chockful of some really quotable segments. Here are some of my favorites:
“We need a shoulder to cry on when we are sad, encouragement when we are down, accountability when we stray, strength when we are weak, a calming voice when we are angry, and grounding when we’re too proud…Begin bringing into your life a group of like-minded women [and men] who support you and your dreams no matter how different they are.”
"Integrity is the most powerful vehicle to success, to becoming a magnet to oppurtunity, and finding people willing to take a leap of faith to support you. You attract what you are. Stop making excuses, raise the standards for yourself, and watch the caliber of people you begin to attract rise right along with you."
“Life is not about picking out the parts you like and leaving the rest, it’s learning to coexist with it all and choosing to see the beauty, the grace, and the hilarity while also experiencing the inevitable disappointment and failure.”
If you're looking for a lighthearted, yet meaningful read, I would definitely recommend picking up I Am That Girl and giving it a go!
