Get Fit 2015: The Best Way to Train for Your Fitness Goals

Friday, December 26, 2014

I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas! 2015 is only five days away and if you're anything like me, you're thinking about what New Year's Resolutions to set. Most people want to get in better shape and today I have a round-up of the best kinds of exercises to do based on your exercise. Whether you're looking to lose weight, tone up, get ab definition or reduce stress, there's an ideal workout for you. (Just remember, it's good to get variety in your workouts, so don't be afraid to switch things up from time to time. In fact, you could fit all the following workouts into your regular routine for overall wellness!)

Fast results: Circuit Training/HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training)
This is by far my favorite way to get in shape and the one I've gotten the most results from. Whether you use an app like Nike Training Club, find workouts on Pinterest, or make your own, circuit training is great because it can double as both cardio and weight training if you do it right. I personally love circuit training because it's hard to get bored: one minute I'm doing pushups, the next I'm doing squats etc. HIIT training in particular boosts your metabolism and has been shown to reduce stubborn belly fat.
My Favorite Circuit Training and HIIT workouts (they can all be done at home!):
Love Your Body with HIIT
Humpday HIIT
The 54321 Workout
Bob Harper's "Get Fit Anywhere Workout" (not sure this is actually Bob Harper, but it's a good workout!)
Blogilates HIIT Videos
Nike Training Club Workouts
Lauren Conrad's 30 Minute Workout
For more information on the benefits of HIIT and how to make your own workout, I highly recommend reading Jillian Michael's Slim for Life.

Get a six-pack: Pilates
If you want to work your core, Pilates is a great way to do it. Pilates focuses on finding balance and stability in a variety of movements, so you'll constantly be using your abs, even when you're working other body parts. My favorite way to do Pilates is by using Blogilates videos, but there are other resources as well. You can buy a DVD, find YouTube videos, or even attend a class.

Calm your mind or reduce stress: Yoga
Not only does yoga help you get in shape, it also helps clear your mind and release stress. The mental benefits of yoga are my favorite part of practicing it. The popularity of yoga has become explosive recently, so it's really easy to find a way to practice it. Whether you find a book at the library, get a DVD, check out Tara Stiles' YouTube Channel or attend a real class, the options are limitless.
My Favorite Yoga Videos:
Love Your Body with Yoga
Jillian Michaels: Yoga Meltdown
Denise Austin: Yoga Body Burn
(There's also a few yoga videos on Nike Training Club.)

Get toned: Weight Training/Kettlebells
As I've talked about before, the idea that lifting weights makes women bulky is a total myth. Building lean body mass will actually increase your metabolism and give you an overall toned look (and who doesn't want that?) Kettlebells are particularly effective (you can read why here.)
My favorite weight training videos:
Love Your Body with Kettlebells
Love Your Total Body 2
Awesomesauce Arms
Lauren Conrad's 20x3 Workout

What are your resolutions for the New Year?
